Unai Emery has hailed Danny Welbeck after his brace helped Arsenal record a 3-1 win over Brentford to progress in the EFL Cup.

Arsenal have won four successive Premier League games to hoist themselves into sixth spot in the Premier League table above Manchester United.

The Gunners head into Wednesday's match with five consecutive wins.

A fine Alan Judge free-kick halved the arrears but, despite Brentford outplaying their hosts for much of the second half, substitute Alexandre Lacazette wrapped up the win in stoppage time.

"He's a great player, we see it every day in training and he's had lots of great performances in the under-23s", Welbeck told Arsenal's official website.

"I want to look at him also with our best performance and for him to stay in first XI".

"I would rather have had Macclesfield at home but unfortunately we've got to travel to the Emirates which I'm sure all our supporters will be looking forward to", said Smith. Tonight, it's a good performance from every player and also Danny Welbeck, he worked with two goals, helping us. But also I want another [strong] player on the bench.

Emery was also questioned on Welbeck's contract situation, along with that of his team-mate Aaron Ramsey.

"What I can do is just focus on me, not focus on anything else that is the most important thing".

"But the performance and the commitment is very high".
