First look at Joaquin Phoenix in Joker standalone movie revealed

He simply captioned the snap, "Arthur", seemingly confirming rumours that the character's real name will be Arthur Fleck.

The Phoenix movie is scheduled to hit theaters October 4, 2019. Some leaked photos and videos have also arrived online which shows Phoenix's Arthur walking around and messing with a clown.

Specifically, studio Warner Bros. has described Joker as an "exploration of a man disregarded by society", and a "gritty character study" that simultaneously serves as a "broader cautionary tale".

Phoenix will star in the upcoming untitled Joker origin movie.

Anticipation appears to be building for Phillips' film, which also stars Marc Maron, Robert De Niro and Zasie Beetz, all added to the cast over the past few weeks.

This is the face of the man who will one day become the scourge of Gotham City and Batman's principal nemesis, Joker. That about does it for anyone hoping we'd see a return of the "Jack Napier" name that was first given to the character in Tim Burton's Batman movie in 1989.

On Instagram, on Sunday, September 16, Phillips officially revealed the first photograph of Phoenix in character, looking weathered and sporting a disgusting hairstyle. Maybe. "Joker" is now filming, so this should be the start of many official and unofficial photos, and - eventually - trailers.

We do not yet have the vintage Joker look of Phoenix yet.

This movie is unrelated to the rumored Jared Leto led vehicle, and should have no effect on the rest of the DCEU.

Phillips is co-writing and directing the Joker film.
