Top Dem says Trump is 'terrified' of what Manafort could reveal

House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Adam Schiff said special counsel Robert Mueller is the real figure who is "draining the swamp", and that President Trump is "terrified" of what his former campaign chairman may be telling prosecutors. "They're terrified of what he has to say".

"I'm surprised that we are where we are, that Manafort is cooperating", Schiff said. Others who have pleaded guilty are former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos and Manafort's deputy Rick Gates.

Asked by Todd about remarks by Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani that Manafort is "not disqualified" from a pardon, Schiff said that "clearly, the Trump team is terrified of what Manafort has to say".

Trump going ahead with $200 billion more in China tariffs
The proposed additional sanctions come as trade negotiations between the two countries have failed to make any real breakthroughs. If imposed, those tariffs would bring the total imports from China subject to penalties to more than $500 billion.

But Harvard law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz said Giuliani is putting a positive spin on "bad" situation for President Trump. NBC reported that Manafort traded his Trump Tower condo for the contents of one bank account and added a second Soho apartment to the mix in order to keep his Virginia property.

Mr. Trump always contended that Mr. Mueller's probe is a "witch hunt" organized by Democrats to undermine his presidency.

"I feel very badly for Paul Manafort and his wonderful family", Trump said. "If [Manafort] was going to make a deal, he should have made it before he was convicted". He would have gotten a better deal.

Manafort played a role in one key event Mueller is investigating, a June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower in NY, the then-candidate's campaign headquarters. He added that Manafort also has close ties to "a Russian oligarch" - likely referencing Oleg Deripaska, who hoped to influence US politics according to Fox News reporting.

Turkey stuns market with massive interest rate hike
In the other direction, with the economy heading into recession, lower rates would help inject growth stimuli. Thursday's rate hike appears to have bought time for the Turkish economy and the nation's besieged currency.
