KABUL-U.S. and Afghan forces killed the leader of Islamic State in Afghanistan on Saturday night in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar, Afghan officials said Sunday, the third head of the terror group to be killed since July a year ago.
The National Directorate of Security in Kabul said the strikes that killed Erhabi were part of a joint air and ground operation conducted alongside US-led coalition forces. The intelligence agency described him as the "emir" of the group, though that.
Arhabi is the fourth leader of Daesh's Afghan branch to be killed since the group first emerged in the country around 2014.
"US forces conducted a counter-terrorism strike in Nangarhar province targeting a senior leader of a terrorist group", said a spokesperson for Operation Resolute Support, a NATO-led mission which trains and advises Afghan forces".
