Donald Trump’s bad week: President’s men turn against the President

Allen Weisselberg, CFO of the Trump Organization, was granted immunity by NY prosecutors in relation to the Michael Cohen investigation, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

"Pecker's apparent decision to corroborate Cohen's account, and implicate Trump in a federal crime, is another vivid example of how isolated Trump is becoming", wrote Vanity Fair's Gabriel Sherman, who broke the AMI story.

Weisselberg, 70, began working for the Trump Organization as an accountant in the 1970s, when President Donald Trump's father Fred ran the company.

Two people with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press about the deal Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. He's so trusted by Trump that he's the only non-family member who serves as a trustee for the trust that owns the constellation of business interests that form the Trump Organization.

The Trump Organization has not commented on the reports, which first emerged in the Wall Street Journal.

Cohen, who arranged hush-money payments before the 2016 US presidential election to at least two women who had alleged having sex with Trump, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to campaign finance violations and other charges.

Mr Weisselberg, Chief Financial Officer, is the latest to get immunity.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan, which has been leading the Cohen probe, declined to comment, as did the White House.

Later in the recording, Cohen is heard reminding Trump he "spoke with Allen" about the financing of the payment to the publisher of the National Enquirer for the rights to Karen McDougal's story.

Both women claimed affairs with Mr Trump, which he has denied, and were paid for their silence. Cohen has indicated he may cooperate with that inquiry.

In Mr Cohen's court appearance in Manhattan to enter his guilty plea on Tuesday, he did not specifically name the two women or even Mr Trump, recounting instead that he worked with an "unnamed candidate".

"Mr. Weisselberg is a bookkeeper who simply carries out directions from others about monetary payments and transfers, " he said.

"I think the president has to realize that the countdown to impeachment has already started". It followed days of intense domestic pressure and negative headlines.
