Turkish lira resumes fall after Trump sanctions threat

A Turkish court on Friday rejected an appeal to release an American pastor at the centre of a diplomatic crisis with the U.S., just a day after Washington threatened more sanctions if his detention continued.

The case of Andrew Brunson, an evangelical Christian missionary from North Carolina who has lived in Turkey for two decades, has become a flashpoint of tension between Washington and Ankara and has accelerated a currency crisis that has richocheted through global financial markets.

Turkey's economy is in deep trouble, but the broader problem has less to do with Trump's sanctions and tariffs than with Erdogan's economic mismanagement.

Dashing hopes for a quick solution to the dispute, a Turkish court on Friday rejected an appeal for the pastor's release from house detention.
