Vettel led Bottas when Marcus Ericsson's crash triggered the deployment of the Safety Car on lap 33 of 52, while Hamilton was running in fifth position following his first-lap spin.
At the French Grand Prix, Vettel ran into Hamilton's teammate Valtteri Bottas at the start of the race, an incident which forced him to retire. He was slapped with a 10-second penalty and two points on his drivers' licence.
Bottas and Hamilton also backed the decision, thought the Finn conceded that given the outcome of his race, mirroring Vettel would have led to a better result.
Hamilton's hopes of finishing on the Silverstone podium, let alone claiming a record sixth victory, appeared over after he was spun into the run-off area by Raikkonen and dropped to 18th place.
First, the Englishman broke protocol by refusing to be interviewed after the race and headed straight for the podium green room.

Bottas thus inherited the lead while Hamilton moved into third position; Bottas defended from Vettel but relinquished the advantage with six laps left, and also fell behind Hamilton.
Vettel shrugged off the accusations.

Later, responding to the comments from Mercedes, Raikkonen said: "That's how it goes sometimes".
