Pilots’ strike achieved nothing, says Ryanair

Up to 30 flights were cancelled on Thursday affecting some 5,000 passengers.

Ryanair has confirmed that 30 flights to and from Ireland and the United Kingdom will be cancelled on Thursday after talks between management and unions broke down.

The IALPA ballot of those directly employed by Ryanair resulted in overwhelming support - 99% - for action, although Ryanair says this only represents 27% of its workforce in the Republic of Ireland.

The strike is only the second by employees of the airline after pilots in Germany walked out for a few hours in December without major disruptions.

Ryanair cancellations: How to claim compensation?

There are separate strikes over a wide range of issues planned by Ryanair cabin crew in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Belgium on 25 and 26 of July.

The announcement came hours after Ryanair said that Thursday's strike by some of its pilots had got them nowhere and if they insisted on further strikes then so be it.

Forsa had said late Wednesday that talks with Ryanair had ended after seven hours of talks with "very little progress". The airline offered to pay for taxis or public parking for pilots working on Thursday so they could avoid the picket.

A statement released by all four unions that are representing the cabin crews said: "We call on the European Commission, and the governments of every European country where Ryanair operates, to act upon the social dumping performed by the Irish low-priced carrier and to enforce the EU employment and national imperative legislation".

"There has been no customer disruption other than the 30 flights which were cancelled ... and all these customers switched flights or selected refunds", a spokesman said.
