TS Chris begins NE path in Atlantic Ocean

Tropical Storm Chris continues to spin off North Carolina coast

The National Hurricane Centre confirmed this change in a tweet which said: "Chris is the second hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season, after hurricane Beryl".

As of Wednesday morning, Chris, located off the eastern USA seaboard north of the Carolinas, is a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour.

Tropical storm Chris, a compact system that came together off the Carolinas, was expected to gain hurricane strength Tuesday and set off on a northeastward course away from the East Coast.

Stormy conditions are expected to taper off through the overnight hours as Chris continues to push northeast. AccuWeather reports that a man in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina died after he ignored "No Swimming" signs posted along the beach and encountered rough surf. However, meteorologists do not expect it to make landfall in any part of U.S. Moving northeast and along, but not towards, the coast, the closest its projected path comes to land is Newfoundland, Canada. Yesterday, 141 rescues were performed in Ocean City, Maryland, due to rough surf and risky rip currents.

"While some heavy rain is possible, especially across the northwest of the United Kingdom, it may be more welcome than usual, given the prolonged dry spell". Its center will be near southeastern Newfoundland Thursday night.

The "intense" Category 2 storm will have weakened by the time it reaches Britain but will bring an end the longest hot spell for five years.
