Australia's World Cup ended with a whimper as goals from Andre Carrillo and Paolo Guerrero gave Peru a 2-0 victory in the teams´ group finale on Tuesday.

"The think I have influence on is the game against Peru".

In the end, 2-0 was how the score remained as both Australia and Peru were eliminated from the tournament.

"This triumph is for our people and for Jefferson (Farfan)", Guerrero said of his teammate who missed the match after being hospitalized with a head injury sustained in practice last weekend.

Not even an early second-half injection of talisman Tim Cahill could spark the Socceroos, their 38-year-old striker denied a goal in his World Cup swansong when he fired a volley straight into a Peru defender. But he had few chances. The Peruvians, boosted by a loud crowd that heavily outnumbered the Aussies, took advantage of their chances and gave their team an honourable finish after two opening losses.

Tom Rogic then had a wonderful chance to level in the 28th minute after dancing past a couple of challenges inside the Peru box, but the Celtic midfielder could not poke the ball past goalkeeper Pedro Gallese.

Peru nearly added its third goal when Edison Flores' shot hit the post following a fast breakaway. As the minutes progressed, the counter was working as Peru was giving away the ball in crucial places, allowing its opponent to threaten, who was clearly looking for a win knowing its hope to qualify to the knockout stage was still alive.

Already guaranteed of progression to the last 16, Les Bleus (six points) play Denmark (four points) in Moscow at the same time as the Socceroos face Peru.

"We went in with greater expectations, however, if we look at how we played I think Peru emerges from a World Cup with its head held high".

Despite lacking world class players, a sports-mad Australian public inevitably heaps great expectations on their national teams, and the strain of guiding the Socceroos in Russian Federation proved too much for Van Marwijk's predecessor Ange Postecoglou.

Gareth Southgate says England not plotting path through World Cup knockout stages
There's one more reason why the Belgians and English may not be desperate to roll out their big guns in Kaliningrad. Drogba told BBC that he worked with Lukaku at Chelsea on that technique as he went through on goal.

"Thank you to the press from all of Peru's staff, players, and technical team", Gareca said. Unfortunately for Los Incas, they have lost their cool in the moments that mattered with Christian Cueva's missed penalty against Denmark summing up their performance so far.

"We were effective this time".

And it was delivered by Guerrero, who had a drug suspension prohibiting him from playing in the World Cup overturned at the 11th hour.

The South Americans will have a huge support with them by the Black Sea as they attempt to claim a consolation victory in their first appearance at the World Cup since 1982.

Van Marwijk also raised doubts about the validity of Carrillo's 18th-minute opener due to an alleged offside in the build-up, something captain Mile Jedinak also mentioned to reporters.
