According to the indictment, Sara Netanyahu was aware that she was violating the rules when she ordered the meals.

There were and still are differences of opinion between the lawyers defending Sara Netanyahu, Hebrew media reported Thursday.

The charges against Saidoff are more severe, as he is also accused of illicitly hiring chefs and servers for private meals at the Netanyahu home.

Benjamin Netanyahu posted a message on his official Facebook page, slamming the charges Thursday.

"An indictment based on an illegal procedure can not hold water", the statement says.

Sara Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's wife, is charged with fraud and breach of trust, over her ordering some $100,000 worth of food to be catered from pricey restaurants.

Netanyahu, who has been questioned twice before in so-called Case 4000, and Bezeq have denied wrongdoing.

What did the Israeli prime minister say?

The investigation began in 2015 after the State Comptroller's Office issued a report on the Netanyahu family household expenses. And gifts of jewelry to Sara Netanyahu are among hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes that the police, in February, accused her husband of accepting. Benjamin Netanyahu is also under investigation.

Sara Netanyahu's extravagant living has always been a topic of controversy in the country, and husband Benjamin still faces a number of police investigations into alleged corruption, the AP reported.

The state prosecutor has asked that the case be heard before an expanded panel of three judges in the magistrates' court in Jerusalem due to the sensitive nature of a case that potentially compromises the public's trust in elected officials and their families.

"Not only is the indictment based on false claims and erroneous and distorted data", said the statement, "it is based entirely on an improper and illegal procedure that was applied especially for Prime Minister Netanyahu and for him alone".

The indictment threatened to reinforce the unflattering reputation the Netanyahus have gained over the years of enjoying an expensive lifestyle and being out of touch with most Israelis.

But Netanyahu has said that even if he himself is indicted on other charges he would not resign.
