E3 2018: Sony Responds To Anger Over Fortnite Cross-Play Block

The one that's now making headlines is the account connectivity problem that's basically screwing tons of Switch players out of items they've paid for and their account progress. The move is a seemingly untenable expansion of Sony's long-standing unwillingness to allow cross-platform play between the PS4 and other consoles, and it's drawing widespread ire among players.

The is a PlayStation 4 specific issue. With sales so gargantuan - 79 million PS4s sold, and 80 million monthly active users on the PlayStation Network - you'd think Sony would be confident about the PlayStation 4. As an Xbox One player, I simply logged into my account on the Switch and saw my character and Battle Pass progress exactly how I left it on the Xbox One. We believe that it's not going to be any type of issue for us. Or PS4 and the Xbox One, while we're at it. Perhaps the Sony rep who crafted the above statement should consider a second career in politics.

Note that the sale of these games will run until the 21st of June at 11:59AM ET/8:59AM PT, so you'll have about a week to enjoy the discounts.

Nintendo has been one of the few console publishers to let players use their internet services for no charge. It doesn't help the player.

"We had an incredible time celebrating Fortnite with our players and partners this year at E3", the company said. "So, I just get stuck in who this is helping". The problem with Sony's response to the cross-play issue is that it does not acknowledge the problem in the first place. And then PlayStation 4 owners tried to login.

With the release of Fortnite on the Switch we now learn that Sony is in effect actively blocking the mere concept of players being able to share anything between consoles.

And while it brings the Fortnite Battle Royale mode to Nintendo's hybrid console, it appears that developer Epic Games will not be bringing the game's cooperative experience, Save the World, to the Nintendo Switch.

In a statement to the BBC, Sony highlighted that it offers cross-play support "with PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, expanding the opportunity for Fortnite fans on PS4 to play with even more gamers on other platforms".

Epic Games declined to comment on the situation, but Nintendo President and COO of Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aime told Polygon at E3 that there is not much that it can do when it comes to the ways that other companies handle their gaming accounts.
