The prime minister's silence on Monday came in sharp contrast to a roar of disapproval among Canadian politicians, who banded together across party lines to denounce Trump's attack and praise the bilateral and trading relationship between the two neighbours.

But before the group could sign off on a joint statement of agreement on trade talks, Trump's advisers reportedly insisted that the USA would not agree to two key points in the statement related to the environment.

Britain on Monday urged the United States to honour free-trade commitments made at the G7 summit even after US President Donald Trump rejected a joint communique in a bitter spat over tariffs.

Hayden added that the display reminded him of Sean Spicer lying about crowd sizes in a press briefing after Trump's inauguration: "He did it for personal survival", Hayden said.

She said that the European countries will not be "taken advantage of" in terms of trade and that they would "act" against the US trade measures, which are considered as going against the World Trade Organization's rules.

Trump and Trudeau have been at odds ever since the United States announced in late May that Canada will no longer be exempt from steel and aluminum tariffs, a decision that Trudeau described as "totally unacceptable".

Pompeo declined to comment on the specific remarks by Navarro. If it is fake, I have little hope for Canada while he is in charge.

"Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal", he tweeted. He adds that America "cannot let our friends, or enemies, take advantage of us on trade anymore".
