Rafael Nadal beats Dominic Thiem to win record 11th Roland Garros title

In 2003, at the age of 16, Nadal became the youngest man to reach the third round of Wimbledon since Boris Becker in 1984.

- Victory on Sunday gave Nadal his 11th crown at Roland Garros from 11 finals.

Nadal joins Australia's Margaret Court as the only player to win 11 titles at the same major.

The result also marks the sixth consecutive Grand Slam won by either Nadal or Federer. He persists at his punishing physicality and pounding shots even 13 long and grinding years after the wonder from the Spanish island of Mallorca debuted at Roland Garros with sleeveless shirts, clam-digger shorts, shoulder-length hair and MMA muscles, and, two days after his 19th birthday, won his first title and said, "I fight every point, every point, no?"

Nadal retained the momentum in the second set, breaking his opponent in the second game and holding out to edge closer to yet another title at Roland Garros.

He reeled off the first six points for a 2-0 lead before Thiem settled and repaired the damage for 2-2.

After winning 26 of his 27 matches throughout the European claycourt season and 81 of his last 86 sets on clay there is nothing to suggest Nadal's domination in Paris will end soon.

The world No. 1 wasn't as invincible this year - there may have been an injury issue - but he was still plenty good enough at the grand slam where he is virtually unbeatable.

Rafael Nadal duly collected his 11th French Open title here on Sunday with a brutal, brilliant, resilient and ruthless performance, just as he had done 10 times before. Federer's record in Wimbledon finals is 8-3.

And in 2012, he surpassed Borg's record to become the most successful player in French Open history with his seventh crown.

"He was playing very well, I think, and there is a reason why he won 11 times here", Thiem added.

Over the best-of-five sets on clay, Nadal improved to 111-2 - it is a figure nearly as imposing as the nearby Eiffel Tower - his lone reverses coming against Robin Soderling in 2009 and Novak Djokovic in 2015 at the French Open. He was presented with the Coupe de Mousquetaires by another legend of the sport, Bjorn Borg.

"It's really just incredible".

But at 4-5 Thiem's serve let him down badly, handing Nadal three set points.

It was his most one-sided final win since allowing Federer just four games in the 2008 final. He also beat the Spaniard in Buenos Aires in 2016. The world No 1 lived up to his billing as the heavy favourite with a 6-3 6-3 6-4 victory over surprise finalist Anderson.
