The most extreme increase from 1999 to 2016 was in North Dakota, with a 57.6 percent rise.

With almost 45,000 suicides across the country in 2016, the report described suicide as a "growing public health problem" and said a variety of factors may contribute to the increase.
Perhaps even more startling, in more than half of those suicide deaths, the people had no known mental health condition. Many factors often contribute to suicide including relationship problems or loss, substance abuse, physical health problems and job, money, legal or housing stress.
Guns were the most common method used for suicide, accounting for nearly half of the people who died.
