Ikea has announced a range of sustainability commitments that includes a pledge to remove all single-use plastic products from stores by 2020.

Ikea said plastic straws, plates, cups, freezer bags, bin bags, and plastic-coated paper plates and cups would all be phased out and where possible replaced by alternatives.

The change will also come into effect across Ikea's restaurants which will stop giving out plastic straws, cups, plates, cutlery, drink stirrers and plastic containers for freshly prepared food.

IKEA also plans on becoming climate positive and reducing the total IKEA climate footprint by an average of 70 percent per product and achieving zero emissions home deliveries by 2025, with plans to work alongside furnishing suppliers across their entire factories.

Ikea has previously invested about $2 billion into renewable energy, according to CNN Money, installing 750,000 solar panels on its buildings and building 416 wind turbines. Canada has made plastic reduction a key priority for this week's G7 following British Prime Minister Theresa May's move to ban single-use items like plastic straws and cotton swabs in the United Kingdom. Its use increased 20-fold in the past 50 years and is expected to double again in the next 20 years.

The announcement comes on the heels of other retailers and restaurants taking action against disposable items such as plastic drinking straws, cups and bags, which accumulate in the environment and harm marine life.
