Steve Smith ‘spent four days in tears’ after ball-tampering scandal

James Sutherland has chose to stand down as the Cricket Australia chief executive after 17 years, setting a 12-month exit period to finish up before officially departing in 2019.

"My overwhelming feeling today is a sense of gratitude", Sutherland said. "I feel very comfortable that this is the right time for me and a good time for the game", he said.

Meanwhile, David Peever, CA's Chairman, thanked Sutherland for his services and confirmed that he will stay on for another term.

Gasquet was seeded 27th in Paris but has been ranked as high as No. 7 and made it to three Grand Slam semi-finals. On tap Sunday, the fourth round begins with Novak Djokovic and Fernando Verdasco colliding for a 15th time.

"The game has never been in a stronger position and we are looking forward to continuing to work with James whilst we conduct a search to find a suitable replacement", said Peever.

Smith, former vice-captain David Warner and batsman Cameron Bancroft were given lengthy suspensions for the tampering, a ploy to give the team's bowlers an advantage. "David [Peever] and I have been talking about this for two years".

"James has done an incredible job and has always carried himself with integrity, humility and dignity, apart from knowing the game of cricket inside out".

Some of the major changes included the formation of the Big Bash League in 2011, and major increases in broadcast rights deals in 2013 and this year.

"Obviously there was Cape Town, but there's also some key planks that are now in place that allow me to step aside and for a new chief executive to come in".

Most recently, the South Africa tour and the Newlands ball-tampering scandal shone a poor light on the national team and the organisation.
