Nate Boulton suspends campaign after allegations of sexual misconduct

Three women accuse Iowa governor candidate of sexual misconduct

Three Des Moines women told The Des Moines Register on Tuesday that Boulton made inappropriate sexual conduct with them.

Democratic Iowa gubernatorial candidate Nate Boulton has been accused of sexual misconduct by three women, the Des Moines Register reported Wednesday. The Register said the women chose to share their stories partly because of the #Me Too movement, but did not say specifically whether the newspaper had sought them out for interviews or whether the women had approached the newspaper.

"Nate Boulton's behavior in the social settings referenced in the article, as described by women who were social peers, in no way equates to the disgraceful actions taken by men across the country and in the Iowa Statehouse who have assaulted, harassed, and threatened women with workplace consequences", Boulton said in a press release. "That means making sure we have the wage growth we need, that we have the quality of life for workers in this state, so that they want to stay here, so that our youngest-our best and brightest-stay in our communities across Iowa, and that we can recruit the next generation of skilled workers that we need".

The chairman of the Republican Party of Iowa Jeff Kaufmann released a statement after hearing about the accusations.

"Let me be very clear, there is no place for sexual misconduct or harassment in politics or anywhere else".
