The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that second baseman Robinson Canó of the Seattle Mariners has received an 80-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Furosemide, a Diuretic, in violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
Cano has already come out with the cookie cutter denial we always see, with the word "never" attached to cheating the game or taking PEDs, while suggesting Furosemide is not actually a performance-enhancing substance and something he got for medical need.
In a statement released by the players' union, Cano said a doctor in his native Dominican Republic prescribed the medication to treat an unspecified medical ailment. Furosemide is more commonly sold under the name Lasix. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement specifies such details remain confidential.
Robinson Cano has had what many claim to be a Hall of Fame career. In his five years with the Mariners, Cano has been a three-time All-Star with a.294 batting average, 101 home runs and 384 RBI. He has explained to us what happened, accepted the punishment and has apologized to the fans, the organization and his team-mates.
"Robinson made a mistake", the Mariners said in a statement.
Cano is now out injured after suffering a broken bone in his hand after being hit by a pitch.
The suspension comes on the heels of Cano suffering the first significant injury of his tenure in Seattle.
"Any time a team loses its three-hole hitter, it doesn't just have somebody to step in and replace that guy", Mariners manager Scott Servais said when Cano went on the DL but prior to his suspension.

The 80-game suspension is without pay, meaning Cano will miss out on almost half of the $24 million that he was owed for the 2018 season.
