A 70-year-old double amputee has climbed Everest.

Mount Everest's summit season got underway Monday with at least 30 climbers reaching the peak, including record-setting climbs from a Chinese double amputee and an Australian who has climbed the highest peaks on every continent. He stood atop the summit at 8.40 a.m. (10.55 p.m. EDT).

If successful, Xia Boyu will be the first ever double-amputee to reach Everest's summit from the south side.

The Everest route opened on May 13 this year after an eight-member team of Sherpas repaired the ropes.

The authorities said the new rules were a safety measure but they were struck down by the courts earlier this year as discriminatory. Plain's expedition company said it took him 117 days to scale the so-called Seven Summits, culminating in the ascent of Everest on Monday morning.

Xia had lost both of his legs in his first attempt in 1975. The first record of double amputee on Everest is held by Mark Inglish from New Zealand. He signed onto expeditions in three consecutive years-2014, 2015 and 2016-only to have fate conspire against him again: an avalanche and an natural disaster curtailed the climbing seasons in the first two years, respectively. They were just 500 feet shy of the summit when weather forced his team down.

Boyu's Everest dream was reborn. "I have to realise it". His attempt in 2015 was also cancelled following a 7.8 natural disaster that shook Nepal and triggered more avalanches on the mountain.

A Nepali-born Canadian, Sudarshan Gautam, is the first double arm amputee to climb the world's highest mountain.

Nepal has issued 346 permits to mountaineers for this year's spring climbing season, which runs from mid-April to the end of May.

According to the China Tibet Mountaineering Association, another 180 climbers are preparing to summit Everest from its north side in Tibet.

Expedition officials shared that more than 90 per cent of the liaison officers have not reached the base camp yet to facilitate the world climbers.

Last year, 634 people made it to the peak of Mt Everest while seven died trying.
