Boston's Yawkey Way gets new name over allegations of racist origin

"As we have said throughout this process, the effort to expunge Tom Yawkey's name has been based on a false narrative about his life and his historic 43-year ownership of the Red Sox", the organization said. The accusation started a greater conversation in the city, and in an effort to sever the connection with Yawkey, current Red Sox owner John Henry requested the name change.

The Red Sox filed a petition with the commission in February and said that restoring the Jersey Street name is meant to reinforce that Fenway Park is 'inclusive and welcoming to all'.

Yawkey Way is no more.

Hence the Red Sox ownership seeking to drop the Yawkey Way name from a Fenway Park street that's closed before every home game so the pregame festivities, beer and entertainment can begin outside the ballpark. That's what it was called before it was changed in 1977 to honor Tom Yawkey a year after he died.

FedEx Truck Overturns On 210 Freeway, Trailer Lands On Gold Line Tracks
Train service was disrupted and three lanes of the westbound 210 Freeway at Lake Avenue were closed for a little over eight hours. Metro spokesman Rick Jager said the truck ended up on two sets of tracks, blocking traffic near the Lake Station.

"It is important to separate the unfortunate and undeniable history of the Red Sox with regards to race and integration from the incredible charitable work the Yawkey Foundation has accomplished in this millennium and over the last 16 years", the team said in a statement.

In a statement from the Red Sox, the team said it was pleased with the outcome of Thursday's hearing and thanked members of the community who voiced their support for the proposal. "I think that the challenge for the Yawkey Foundations has been that they have not owned up to the responsibility of that fact that Mr. Yawkey had made some bad decisions when it came to people of color".

Previous to that, the staff selected to not signal a number of outstanding black gamers, together with Robinson and Willie Mays. The Red Sox were the last team in Major League Baseball to hire a black player, which according to ESPN, was infielder Pumpsie Green, who was called up to the big leagues in 1959.

Principal owner John Henry told the Boston Herald previous year that "I am still haunted by what went on here a long time before we arrived".

In its assertion, the Yawkey Basis claimed that it had "at all times acknowledged that it's regrettable that the Pink Sox had been the final Main League baseball staff to combine".

At this point, no word has been given as to when the street would officially be changed.

Democratic Mayor Marty Walsh did not say whether he agreed with the change, but noted that the change alone would not address the problem of racism.

It was not clear when the street signs would be changed. So it will be Jersey Street again.
