Spurs were left chasing shadows as the Blues knocked the ball around purposefully and with speed and after just four minutes, the visitors' superiority was so almost rewarded as Leroy Sane's sumptuous volley smacked against the inside of the post from Raheem Sterling's cross.

Things went from bad to worse for Spurs and their captain as Lloris' reckless lunge on Sterling - which appeared outside of the area - handed City a penalty which Gundogan coolly slotted home.

Tottenham Hotspur: Lloris (C), Trippier, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies, Dier, Dembele, Lamela, Eriksen, Dele and Kane. Vincent Kompany, Ilkay Gundogan and Fabian Delph returned as Manchester City made three changes.

Spurs reduced the deficit with four minutes remaining in the half as Aymeric Laporte's attempted clearance hit Christian Eriksen and sailed into the back of the net.

Unusually sluggish, Tottenham didn't test City and, with a swagger back in their stride, Guardiola's men took the lead in the 22nd minute.
