Egypt army says 8 soldiers, 14 militants killed in central Sinai

Almost two dozen Egyptian officers and soldiers were slaughtered and more than two dozen others were injured in an attack early Saturday morning by Islamic State terrorists at the largest Egyptian army base in Sinai.

The military said earlier that 27 militants were killed over the last few days in a sweeping operation launched on February 9 in the Sinai to quash extremists based in the peninsula.

Other Islamists operating in the western desert bordering Libya have also attacked security forces. It did not say how the other nine were killed.

Egypt's North Sinai Province has been the center of terrorist attacks, which have killed hundreds of policemen and soldiers since the military ouster of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.

Egypt has extended an ongoing nationwide state of emergency another three months, starting Saturday 14 April, the official gazette reported late on Friday.

The government, however, said evacuations from Douma were continuing, and no Syrian government forces had entered the town. He said there was a heightened "danger of escalation" because of the Russian military presence in Syria .

In a released statement on the comprehensive security operation in Sinai, the army added that the forces managed to control the theaters of operation in north and central Sinai on all strategic fronts.

Egypt first imposed the current state of emergency in April 2017 after two church bombings killed at least 45 people.

It cited a decree issued by Sisi stating that the renewed three-month state of emergency would take effect from 1:00 am on Saturday (2300 GMT Friday).
