North Korea has told the United States for the first time that it is prepared to discuss the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula when North Korean leader Kim Jong Un meets President Donald Trump, a U.S. official said on Sunday.
Details of the talks were not released but officials from both sides agreed to further meetings on the topic later this week, a spokesman for the South's unification ministry said Monday.
Trump has expressed a willingness to meet with the North Korean leader, and recently said Kim would "do what's right" and get rid of any nuclear weapons. NHK confirmed the content with the White House.
But North Korea has not broken its public silence on the summit, which U.S. officials say is being planned for May.

CNN reported Saturday that secret, direct talks paving the way for the summit were under way between North Korean and U.S. intelligence officials, citing anonymous White House sources. Meanwhile, officials in North Korea have not confirmed the reports that it is willing to negotiate over its own nuclear arsenal.

Earlier today, the official revealed that the unprecedented summit is slated to happen in May and it would be for the first time a sitting US president will meet the leader of North Korea.
Working-level officials from the two sides met last week to discuss the hotline issue and the preparation issue for the summit, such as protocol, security and media coverage.
