Danny Welbeck inspired Arsenal to a sixth straight victory with two goals and an assist in a hot-tempered 3-2 home win over Southampton, to leave the Saints still rooted in the Premier League relegation zone.

"I think he will miss these games for sure, but he could still play at the end of the season".

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger quipped after the game, "When you come here you see good football and you see goals, which is what you want for the fans".

Welbeck's recall suggests he is in contention to make the squad for Russian Federation, though he refuses to look beyond Thursday's Europa League tie against CSKA Moscow.

And Southampton took full advantage of a sloppy start from the hosts in the 17th minute.

However, Shane Long did send Mark Hughes' charges ahead in the 16th minute after reacting quickly to sneak a shot at the near post following a cross into the area, 0-1.

But Alexandre Lacazette has recently returned from a knee injury of his own and Danny Welbeck staked his claim to provide support with two goals against the Saints.

An equaliser was coming, though, and was netted by substitute Austin in the 73rd minute after Cedric had burst into the box to square the ball for a tap-in.

But with just nine minutes left on the clock, Welbeck grabbed the victor, moments after a poor miss from close range.

After the game Wenger singled out the "exceptional" Welbeck. "It's going to be a hard game so our minds are set on that".

"He had every reason to feel sorry for himself".

But he was pleased with the way the team battled their way back into the game in the second half, a trait he felt would help them in their battle to secure a place in the top flight next season.
