Speaking to The Verge, one of the company's three founders, Jason Ballard, said competition is stiff in the emerging market of 3D printed homes. The industrial-sized printer can create houses for $10,000 but is aiming to decrease that price to just $4,000.

The model house that was unveiled had a curved porch, bathroom, bedroom, and living room. 3D printing is already revolutionizing the way products are created and will continue to do so in the future, according to experts. ICON is building this affordable house using low-priced 3D printing technology.

A Texas-based company is using 3D printing technology to find a solution to the growing problem of affordable housing around the world. To battle this inadequacy, an Austin-based startup has proposed an answer of building up a house by utilizing ease 3D printing.

The company recently printed a home for a community in El Salvador.

"(ICON) believes, as do I, that 3D printing is going to be a method for all kinds of housing", New Story co-founder Alexandria Lafci said.

But for those who don't want to live in what is essentially a kitchen with a bed, the printing method used by ICON is capable of producing a home that's up to 74sq m, about twice the size of houses typically pushed by the tiny house movement.

The team are looking for $600,000 for the next phase of research and development and also $400,000 of funding for 100 printed homes. But they are printed in a warehouse, or they look like Yoda huts. Ballard also notes that a home printed using ICON's technology has a tightly sealed envelope-prime for insulation-and top-notch resilience, crucial for tropical nations like Haiti that are often hit by storms. For this venture to succeed, they have to be the best houses... Vulcan's technology is a flawless match for ICON's vision as it was created to work in the worst of circumstances and places where things like potable water and technical assistance are lacking. If all goes according to plan, we may soon see the Vulcan 3D printing homes in the United States as well.

Since these structures need to be sturdy and hospitable, the companies aren't taking any risks and will be refining the process right up until they take it over to El Salvador. "If we can outsource this printing technology to governments and other large organizations, then we can have a massive impact on how many people are being housed per year".
