Amazon Recalls Power Banks Due To Fire, Burn Hazards

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission advises that anyone who has an affected power bank should unplug them immediately and contact Amazon for a full refund.

The chargers, which sold from December 2014 through July 2017 at, Amazon Bookstores and Amazon Pop-Up Stores, retailed for between $9 and $40. The power banks are all used as external battery supplies for smartphones and other products.

The affected batteries are all Amazon's low-priced AmazonBasics brand.

These are the black, rubberized or metallic portable chargers with one of the following ID numbers printed on back: B00LRK8EVO, B00LRK8HJ8, B00LRK8I7O, B00LRK8IV0, B00LRK8JDC or B00ZQ4JQAA.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission says that about 260,000 units are affected.

The recall notice mentions that these AmazonBasics Portable Power Banks are at a risk of overheating which can cause them to melt and thus be a potential fire hazard.

Amazon has received 53 reports of these power banks overheating, which include incidents of battery acid burns and property damage from fire. The potentially unsafe models of the AmazonBasics Power Banks can no longer be purchased. They were manufactured by Guoguang Electric Company Limited, of China.
