The legendary designer's longtime partner, Philippe Venet, announced his death through the house, saying Givenchy had died in his sleep. "He will be greatly missed", the House of Givenchy said.

Though Givenchy sold the brand to luxury conglomerate LVMH in 1988 and officially retired from the house in 1995, his impeccable taste and attention to detail is felt in fashion to this day.

"I am deeply saddened by the loss of a great man and artist I have had the honor to meet and get to know since my appointment at Givenchy", she wrote on Instagram.

The designer forged close friendships with his famous clients, among them Liz Taylor, Jackie Kennedy and Grace Kelly.

The young Givenchy initially studied law but, in the atmosphere of liberation following second World War, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

Early on in his career, he would work alongside some of fashion's greatest icons, like Pierre Balmain and Christian Dior, to flawless his craft. It was this association that many say led to his becoming a fashion legend.

He worked with Hepburn on almost every film she was in - from her show-stopping red gown in Funny Face to the transcendent LBD in Breakfast at Tiffany's - helping to cement her status as a style star.
