California police officer killed, another wounded by suspect barricaded inside home

One cop slain, one wounded in Southern California shooting

Pomona, Calif. - A Pomona police officer who was shot by a barricaded suspect has died, and a second officer also injured during the unfolding incident is undergoing surgery, officials said Saturday.

Dozens of cops responded to the 1400 block of South Palomares Street, and two officers were shot before midnight, according to Police Chief Michael Olivieri. "The second officer is in stable condition". That policeman was being escorted by law enforcement personnel and firefighter to the Los Angeles County coroner's office as the barricade situation continued at the scene. The deceased officer was identified Saturday afternoon as Gregory Casillas, 25, The Daily Bulletin reported. The suspect may still be barricaded in a building.

The shootout begun after the suspect evaded police in a pickup, crashed and fled on foot.

The wounded officer was undergoing surgery Saturday and was expected to recover, he said.

Both officers were taken to the hospital, where one died from his injuries.

The incident began around 9 p.m. local time Friday night in the city of Pomona after police responded to a report of a reckless vehicle, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Capt. Christopher Bergner said at a press conference Saturday morning.

Police said they still don't know who the suspect is, but are communicating with him.

Authorities have not released any more information including whether the suspect is in custody.
