George Nader, a low-profile diplomatic go-between who has forged close ties to the Emirates, was stopped and questioned by the Federal Bureau of Investigation at Dulles International Airport in January as he returned from an overseas trip, these sources say.

Investigators are interested in Nader's role at a January 2017 meeting in the Seychelles between Erik Prince, a supporter of President Trump, and a Russian official close to President Vladimir Putin, according to the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters.

A Lebanese-American businessman who witnessed a meeting between a Trump adviser and a Russian investor is cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller for his investigation into the Trump campaign, according to a New York Times report. But when lawmakers asked him who he met with, he didn't state that Nader was at the meeting.

Nader could not be reached for comment, and his lawyer declined to comment.

Citing "two people familiar with the matter", the New York Times reported Tuesday evening that George Nader testified last week to the Mueller grand jury.

Napolitano was reacting to a Washington Post report, published Wednesday, that revealed Mueller is looking into a "secret meeting in the Seychelles" that occurred right before Donald Trump's inauguration.

The Washington Post said the U.A.E. agreed to broker the meeting in part to explore whether Russian Federation could be persuaded to curtail its close relationship with Iran - a key objective of both the Trump administration and several Gulf Arab countries.

Obama's National Security Adviser Susan Rice explained during a September 2017 House Intelligence Committee interview why she unmasked Prince and members of Trump's transition team. And then there's Prince's attempts to win business from the Trump administration for his private mercenary army in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Prince has sharply disputed that account, saying he did not present himself as a representative of the incoming administration.

Nader is an adviser to UAE Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan.

Prince has known Nader for years and once hired him to try to generate business from the Iraqi government in the years after the US invasion of that country. Prince said Bannon vouched for MBZ during the conversation, calling him "a great guy".

Prince later told lawmakers that the 30-minute meeting at a hotel bar was happenstance, not planned in advance. The Washington Post reported last week that at least four countries, including the United Arab Emirates, have discussed ways they could compromise Jared Kushner, the President's son-in-law. According to the Times, Emirati officials believed the American and the Russian were representing their respective presidents.
