Trump says guns only for 'gun adept teachers'

President Donald Trump says he has spoken to House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell about his plans to curb gun violence and bolster school safety in the aftermath of the deadly Florida high school shooting.

The teenager said: "I don't understand why I can still go in a store and buy a weapon of war, an AR".

Trump added: "Highly trained teachers would also serve as a deterrent to the cowards that do this".

President Trump proposed the idea this week following the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 people dead.

"We have to have offensive capability to take people out rapidly before they can do this kind of damage", he said.

At a meeting later Thursday with law enforcement and school officials from around the country, Trump suggested staff who are trained and carry a weapon could even get "a little bit of a bonus" for making their schools safer.

"You're not going to solve it with gun-free spaces, because they'll get in there, and they'll be the only one with a gun".

"Armed America: The Remarkable Story of How and Why Guns Became as American as Apple Pie" is available now at WND's Superstore.

In the wake of this tragedy felt across the nation, President Trump spoke with Parkland survivors over the phone, visited some of them in the hospital and organized a "listening session" about gun violence.

"The problem that's been happening over the last 20 years ... it's all talk and no action", he said.

She told reporters at the Capitol: "We know what we want".

The NRA was an early supporter of Trump's campaign, and it remains unclear how far the president will go to cross them.

The president had invited the teen survivors of school violence and parents of murdered children in a show of his resolve against gun violence in the wake of last week's shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and in past years at schools in CT and Colorado.

"That was not his finest moment".

"We need people that can take care of our children". He also said he would push for an end to the sale of bump stocks, which allow rifles to shoot hundreds of rounds a minute.

He said the people with weapons in schools should be "people who love the children".

"This man standing outside of the school the other day doesn't love the children, probably doesn't know the children", Trump added of Peterson. "They love their pupils and students".

"I'm not talking about every teacher", Trump reaffirmed Friday.

Speaking at a news conference in the state capital Tallahassee, Florida Governor Scott unveiled a US$450 million plan aimed at improving school safety. "He was not a credit to law enforcement". He also pushed hard for arming security guards and many teachers in US schools. On Wednesday, he heard from students and family members of those killed in recent shootings and on Thursday from local and state officials.

Students who survived the Florida shooting have made banning such weapons one of their top demands.

Trump did not say whether he would go to the Capitol to pay his respects.

But there were no words of support from the NRA for his minimum-age proposal — and outright opposition from organizations of teachers and school security guards for the idea of arming schools to deal with intruders. "It's not just one of the 17".

"So we have to do something that works", he said.

Colton Haab, the Junior ROTC member who helped shield classmates in the Florida shooting and who claims CNN wanted to censor his views at a town hall, told Fox News he believes that with proper training, teachers should be armed. Saved a lot of lives, I suspect. He was referring to Aaron Feis, an assistant football coach who died shielding Parkland students from gunman Nikolas Cruz.

Trump, a gun control foe, reacted by advocating arming teachers.

Trump's focus on gun violence came as leaders of the National Rifle Association offered a vigorous defense of gun rights during the Conservative Political Action Conference, urging enhanced - and armed - security at schools.

The U.S., Turnbull continued, has "a completely different context and history, legally and so forth". We want common sense gun laws.
