Wall Street see-saws as momentum slows after five-day rally

Bombardier jumped 11.3 percent to C$3.66 following better-than-expected results and as Delta Air Lines said it would go ahead with plans to buy some Canadian-made CSeries jets after a US trade ruling stopped the United States from imposing steep duties on the aircraft.

Suncor Energy also helped support the market, gaining 2.2 percent to C$43.36 as the price of oil was boosted by a rebound in global equities.

Shares of cannabis companies also came under pressure the day after Canadian government officials said the planned July start date for legalized recreational marijuana was set to be delayed further.

Canopy Growth declined 3.5 percent to C$27, while Aphria Inc declined 5.1 percent to C$14.12.

Among the day's corporate earnings, Air Canada rose 1.3 percent to C$24.64 after it reported better-than-expected profit and said it expects a joint venture with Air China to be wrapped up this spring.

On matters economic, Statistics Canada reported that manufacturing sales declined 0.3% to $55.5 billion in December, following a revised increase of 3.8% in November. Meanwhile, foreign investors reduced their holdings of Canadian securities by $2.0 billion, led by a divestment in Canadian bonds.

The four laggards were weighed most by health-care and gold, each down 0.9%, while materials were off 0.6%.

The Dow Jones industrial average vaulted 167.57 points to 25,367.94, with Cisco Systems as the best-performing stock in the index.
