Southwest runs out of plane de-icer, cancels 220 flights from Midway

All 220 flights were canceled as crews continue to clean up from a heavy snowfall in the area.

Flights departing and arriving from Chicago's O'Hare Airport didn't fare much better. The airline said flight 2123 was pushing back from the gate when the ground crew observed a possible fire near the rear exterior of the aircraft.

No one was injured in the incident and the airport resumed operations normally.

The airline proactively cancelled about 220 flights from Chicago Midway on Sunday afternoon "due to the severity of the winter weather", a spokesperson said, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Sunday was the second time this winter that Southwest has canceled flights at Midway due to de-icing difficulties. The day after Christmas, the airline cancelled nearly 90 flights because of delays over de-icing aircraft.

As of 6 a.m. Monday, 13 flights were canceled at Midway in total, with delays averaging less than 15 minutes, officials said.

The US government has also proposed a $150m (£108m) for ISS to encourage commercial deployment at the space station. The transition draft says NASA will continue to consult with its worldwide partners "to ensure consensus".

Southwest Airlines Co said its operations mostly returned to normal at Chicago Midway Airport on Monday after the breakdown of one of its plane de-icing machines forced the cancellation of some 250 flights on Sunday.

Temperatures in Chicago on Sunday were in the mid-20s, according to the National Weather Service.
