Kalla wins first gold medal of this year's games and Bjoergen makes history

Charlotte Kalla of Sweden won this year's first gold medal when she won the skiathlon. Kalla prevailed by 7.8 seconds in the 15-kilometre race in Pyeongchang on Saturday, marking the third time she has topped the podium at an Olympics. With her win, Bjoergen became the most decorated female Winter Olympian ever.

Norway's Marit Bjørgen took silver, 7.8 seconds back, to become the most decorated female winter Olympian of all time while Finland's Krista Parmakoski clinched bronze, 10.1 seconds behind the victor.

And the victor of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics' first gold medal is.

Kalla has now equalled canoeist Agneta Andersson as the Swedish woman with the most Olympic gold medals, with three.

Finland's Krista Parmakoski finished 10.1 seconds off the pace in third.

After Saturday's finish, Bjørgen's career haul is six golds, four silvers and one bronze.

2010 and 2014 victor Bjoergen had to settle for silver, 7.8 seconds behind, taking a women's record 11th medal overall, six of them gold.
