BJP President Amit Shah on Monday criticised Congress for its absence in the Tripura election campaign and that it intends to benefit CPI (M).

The BJP chief urged people not to give vote to Congress as it has "come up to help CPM win as many seats as possible".

The BJP had emerged as the main rival of the ruling CPI (M)-led Left Front in Tripura, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said at Agartala on Sunday. In his address, Amit Shah made a string of promises to the people of Tripura, including smartphones for youths, and implementation of the seventh pay commision for the government employees.

He said one degree college would be set up in each constituency of the state to upgrade the education system.

He noted that while the BJP leaders are saying that they are not supporting the separate state demand but their ally IPFT has all along being campaigning in its favour, without any objection from them.

CPI (M) state secretary Bijan Dhar said allegations of BJP were completely baseless.

Targeting the alliance between BJP and IPFT, Sarkar stated, "a huge and diabolic conspiracy is going on across the State to destabilize the peace and mutual brotherhood of tribals and non-tribals, clearly indicating the pre-poll alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT)".

The BJP president also accused CPM of resorting to violence against its party workers and said that there is an atmosphere of fear in the state.
