A priest and several churchgoers have been injured during a machete attack on a church in the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta.

The assault occurred during the Sunday's mass in St Lidwina Bedhog Trihanggo church of Sleman district in the province, said the police officer who is in charge of the police station in Gamping sub-district where the incident took place.

Congregation member Andhi Cahyo was quoted as saying that soon after the service started, a fellow member whose head was bleeding ran into the church chased by the assailant. Witnesses and police said the injured included a police officer who tried to subdue the attacker and the 81-year-old priest Karl Edmund Prier, a longtime resident of Indonesia.

He said that when the police arrived, they fired a warning shot but the attacker refused to surrender.

"We cannot confirm yet if this was a terror-related incident", Yogyakarta said, adding that "we can confirm the suspect has been detained and is being treated at hospital".
