Goodbye, Starman: Floating Tesla Roadster Now Heading Toward The Asteroid Belt

SpaceX founder Elon Musk has shared an epic final photo of his Tesla auto in space with a mannequin driver "Starman" behind the wheel.

Just to up the stakes a bit for SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, the Falcon Heavy will also have a very special payload to carry into space: his 2008 Tesla Roadster. Musk said that Crew Dragon is now the company's top priority, with the first demo flights slated for later this year.

But SpaceX reportedly offered NASA and the Air Force a chance to put a payload on the rocket at no cost before deciding to launch the auto.

The company also told investors they were "thrilled to surprise everyone with the next-generation Roadster", a day after Musk sent his first-generation Roadster to Mars aboard a SpaceX rocket.

A more comical side to this news is that Musk included a bright red Tesla Roadster in the rocket, but it was all in order to test the payload according to a Time article. The rocket was SpaceX's largest to date and the largest launched in the United States since the 1970s, and Musk repeatedly warned about the potential for failure before the launch. Clement Thibault, a senior analyst with the web site, grumbled about Musk's recent fundraising efforts for The Boring Co., his new tunnel-drilling company.

SpaceX plans to launch the Falcon Heavy on a test mission at 1:30pm ET, Tuesday, Feb 6.

Elon Musk may be entertaining world+dog with his impressive space invasion but back on terra firma his electric vehicle biz Tesla has just reported its fattest ever quarterly loss.

"It's kind of silly and fun, but I think that silly and fun things are important", said the SpaceX chief.

"A private company just outperformed every government on earth", said Greg Autry, a professor at the University of Southern California and a former NASA White House liaison.

However, details of the operation and what military aircraft were used have not been disclosed by the US Air Force. However, this first mission saw a much lighter payload than is possible delivered into space. It's called Crew Dragon, and NASA plans to use it to ferry astronauts to and from the International Space Station.

But Musk was more interested in talking about what SpaceX will build next.

But that doesn't mean Falcon Heavy will become a distant memory. No matter how old or young you are we can all agree that space is fascinating. And an explosion is precisely what Musk had said could happen for the better part of a year leading up to Tuesday's launch.
