The two policemen who lost their lives in the firing have been identified as Head Constable Mushtaq Ahmad and Constable Babar Ahmad.

A police official told Rising Kashmir that militants fired upon the police party who were accompanying a prisoner to the hospital. Security agencies are investigating reports that the Lashker commander was helped by accomplices who were already positioned inside the hospital before the police party brought him from Rainawari Central Jail.

"We are probing if the two incidents in the Karanagar area are linked", the police source added. "Naveed was accompanied by two policemen".

A senior police officer said they are trying to ascertain how the militants got the information that Naveed was being taken to the hospital.

"Naveed, a resident of Multan in Pakistan, had joined Pakistan based terror outfit LeT in 2011 and was active in the Valley for four years before he was arrested in Kulgam district in 2014".
