"It is with our deepest sorrow that we share the news that ensemble member of 39 years John Mahoney passed away due to complications from cancer while in hospice care on Sunday", Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre announced via Twitter. Tonight's opening night performance of You Got Older has been cancelled. He met John Malkovich, the founder of the theater, in 1977 and was invited to join the troupe.
Mahoney was born in Blackpool, England, according to his biography on the online Broadway database Playbill.
He was homesick at first but studied at Quincy College, then joined the U.S. army to speed up his application for citizenship before gaining a master's degree in English from Western Illinois University.
In a tweet, actor Gary Sinise, who also performed at Steppenwolf, called Mahoney "a wonderful actor".
Mahoney's voice may also be recognizable to younger generations, as he recorded dialogue for several animated movies in the late 90s and early 2000s, including Antz, The Iron Giant, and Atlantis: The Lost Empire.
In "Frasier", the hit "Cheers" spinoff that aired from 1993 to 2004, Mahoney played Martin Crane, a disabled ex-policeman who parked himself in a battered old armchair in Frasier's chic Seattle living room. The role earned him a SAG Award win and nominations for two Emmys and Golden Globes.
Cheers star Ted Danson told Rolling Stone that "John could do anything as an actor; he was so nimble".
