The issue made front-page news in the United Kingdom yesterday after pub chain JD Wetherspoon pulled steak from its menu on Tuesday - the day when the company runs a weekly promotion based on the meat.

The FSA conducted an unannounced inspection of the supplier's Birmingham site on 12 January where it became concerned that the company was allegedly breaching hygiene regulations.

The FSA added that there was no indication that any body who had recently eaten meat supplied by Russell Hume had fallen ill.

Meat supplier Russell Hume has been ordered to cancel all its deliveries after investigators suspected "serious non-compliance" with food safety rules, the Sun reports.

Food safety officials in the United Kingdom have ordered national meat firm Russell Hume to halt supplies after "serious non-compliance" with hygiene rules at one of its sites.

A spokesman said: "Following a discussion earlier this week with our usual supplier, Russell Hume, we have sourced a number of meat products from an alternative supplier and will continue to do so until we receive further information".

It added: "All unused meat supplied by Russell Hume has been withdrawn from the businesses that they supply".

Following this, the Government body and Food Standards Scotland is set to investigate all Russell Hume sites and other locations where its products are stored in England, Scotland and Wales.

A spokeswoman for the Jamie Oliver Group told BigHospitality some steaks and chicken had been taken off the menu on Monday as a precaution, but had returned the following day after the company switched to a new supplier.

The pub is blaming a non-specific supply issue for the meat restriction, saying: "We have had a supply issue with our pubs".

Wetherspoon said the recall meant there might be some unavailability for the next few days.

Wetherspoon apologised to customers "for the inconvenience". Spokesman Eddie Gershon said: 'We have had a supply issue with our pubs.
