JUST IN: Matt Patricia "likely" to be named Lions coach per ESPN

To some surprise on Sunday: Pats defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is "likely" heading to Detroit to take the Lions job once New England's season wraps up. He can not officially accept the job until at least next week as the Patriots will face either the Jaguars or the Steelers in the AFC Championship Game.

Apparently, that's no longer the case if it ever was. In fact, the two spent seven seasons together in New England from 2009 through 2015, prior to Quinn taking the general manager job in Detroit.

The Lions finished 9-7 in 2017, missing the playoffs.

The Lions will have to wait until after New England's playoff run before working on contract details with Patricia.

According to various media reports, he had asserted that the Loya family did not doubt the "integrity of investigative agencies". Loya had died of cardiac arrest in Nagpur on December 1, 2014, when he had gone to attend the wedding of a colleague's daughter.

More on Sunday NFL Countdown. Defensively, though, there have been a lot of questions in the Motor City for quite some time and Patricia would theoretically address those needs with a high-level analytical mind.

The former rocket scientist has done a little bit of everything since joining the Patriots in 2004.

A native of Sherrill, N.Y., Patricia was an offensive lineman at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. He began his coaching career there as well, before making stops at Amherst College and Syracuse.

Patricia has been the Patriots' defensive coordinator since 2012 and has been particularly successful with a "bend-but-don't-break" style that helped the team win Super Bowls in two of the last three seasons.

Do you know why? "When we finally won, it was like a weight was lifted off my shoulders, just all the negativity. Plenty of numbers to lead one to think this is a Vikings victory, but Jones has plenty of numbers of his own.

But the man now destined for one of those jobs is Patricia, one year after he interviewed for the head-coaching jobs with the Rams and Chargers.

Patrica, 43, is a great get for the Lions, and is a Bob Quinn guy through-and-through.

"I don't want to make it seem like I don't like Josh", Brady said. After taking a job maintaining submarines and aircraft carriers, he chose to go back to coaching.
