A trade of right-hander Gerrit Cole from the Pittsburgh Pirates to Houston was reportedly in place on Wednesday, but Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said the deal isn't "imminent". It wasn't immediately clear what Pittsburgh will receive in return.
Though Cole is coming off his worst season - 12-12 with a 4.26 ERA in 33 starts - he is capable of being an elite starter.
Garry Ringrose is a serious doubt for the Six Nations
He's had an operation on the ankle injury that forced him off in the Guinness PRO14 win over Ulster last weekend. Ringrose will also sit out the upcoming Champions Cup Pool games against Glasgow and Montpellier.
In 5 years with the Pirates, Cole has gone 59-42 with a 3.50 ERA and 3.27 FIP in 127 career starts. He is only two seasons removed from a 19-8, 2.60 campaign in 2015, and he's still just 27, so he's an excellent bounceback candidate for 2018. The Astros would appear set to open the season with a rotation of Dallas Keuchel, Justin Verlander, Cole, Lance McCullers and Charlie Morton if the trade is completed.
The Pirates drafted Cole in 2011, using their first overall selection to do so.
