A magnitude 7.6 natural disaster has struck in the Caribbean Sea north of Honduras.

There were no early reports of serious damage or casualties on land after the quake struck shortly before 10pm local time.

Tsunami advisories were canceled overnight for Puerto Rico and other parts of the Caribbean after a powerful quake struck in the Caribbean Sea.

The US Geological Survey measured the natural disaster at a preliminary magnitude of 7.6.

The northern coast of Honduras closest to the quake's epicenter is sparsely populated. The tremor was about 25 miles (44 kilometers) from Honduras' Swan Islands, which are unpopulated except for small navy post.

The shallow quake was recorded at 9:51 p.m. with its epicenter 450 kilometers east of Mahahual, Quintana Roo, at 17.5 n, 83.6 w, at a depth of 33 kilometers and a magnitude of 7.5.
